Can the skills be used by those in other roles?

Yes.

There are a three ways in which the toolkit of skills and the coaching conversation structure can be used:

 1. As a targeted agenda-free intervention to support self-management and increase patient activation

Anyone working with people across a number of sessions – usually 5 or 6 – can use the skills to support the individual to build their confidence to manage whatever issues or combination of issues they are struggling with and improve their health and wellbeing outcomes.  This may be health-related (physical or mental health), lifestyle-related (e.g. weight-loss), work-related, school-related (if working with younger people), or related to other issues impacting on people’s health and wellbeing.

Apart from Health & Wellbeing Coaches in Primary Care, this is relevant as well, for example, as a role within IAPT services, for Community Connectors, for worker/student support roles, and a number of other settings.

The 4-day training provides all the skills needed to deliver Health & Wellbeing Coaching as an intervention together with additional support and supervision to enable coaches to embed the skills to ensure consistent high-quality outcomes.

2. As a way to have effective supported self-management conversations in any role

This is especially important for Care Coordinators and Social Prescribing Link Workers and is a required part of their training. However, this training can also be applied to a wide range of health, social, community care or other roles that involve working with and supporting others.

The 2-day training includes all the skills needed to have effective coaching conversations and consists of:

  • A toolkit of skills that can be used in any context, whether in one-off conversations or across a series of connected or unconnected conversations.
  • A coaching conversation structure that provides a guide as to which skills to draw on, depending on where the patient, or individual, is and what their needs are at that time

Note: The 2-day training is the same as the first 2-days of the 4-day training. Anyone who has completed the 2-day training can continue on to the 4-day training at any time.

3. Integrated into a condition-specific intervention for a wide range of issues (usually in a group setting)

The skills can also be used to support self-management within any targeted context, such as pain management, diabetes management, or to manage symptoms such as fatigue, sleep problems, or lifestyle issues, such as weight management, diet and exercise.
